It's been almost an eon since i last updated. Nothing much has been happening, still stuck in storm-filled Ann Arbor (did i mention we caught the rear -end of a tornado??) Living with my ex-roomate Mike and Andy on Thompson Street, I like the fact that i'm within walking distance of Jimmy John's (mmm, i love subs).

I have a love-hate relationship with Comcast now. Love because I'm glued to the TV every night (NBA playoffs), hate cos I can't get away from it to study AND the internet goes kaput from time to time, screwing up my precious Slam Dunk d/l's.

Damn it, Mike's gf left her cat at our place while she's back in Florida working her arss off. Cute as the little bugger might be (yes, it's a tomcat with his nuts chopped off...ouch), the fact that he's all hyper does not bode well for that feline's future. "He" keeps running and jumping around the apartment like some crazy psycho, trys to eat my food (my ice cream, noooooo), and once i even woke up to find him licking my face (cat drool...*shudder*) No wonder i like dogs better...

Hate to admit it, but i'm starting to get homesick. Can't wait to go back and see all you peeps, especially all u buggers who are still in the service. It'll be funny to see a group of baldies and one dude with hair chilllin out at one corner of the shopping center eh, haha. I just want to enjoy again the aroma and taste of original-home-style-not-like-some-crappy-AA chinese restaurant-crap Beef Kway Teow, the good ol' hawker centre atmosphere and the joy of slamming the ball over a bunch of neightbourhood grade schoolers. The simple life so to speak....

Really missing u guys (and gals)...see u soon

ETA: One Month, One week to go...

Sunday, April 25, 2004

Here's an entry from one of my most trusted and respected friends here in Michigan, a fellow Singaporean by the name of Hian Kai. Well, at least one of us is fully aware of the truth...hope this adds a little more insight for all u peeps into what it is to be a Singaporean

*****************************************************************

21 Feb 2004
My Singapore, my dialemma

Yet another fitting accolade to add to Singapore's illustrious (most of the time) collection of laurels: the land of dichotomy. There's so many opposites and conflicts that it's a wonder that us Singaporeans manage to keep our sanity living here. Here's one shining example of us pointing one foot one way and the other foot in the opposite way:

I had this article forwarded to me from a friend that seems so congruous to all this it's almost uncanny. Check it out here.
Anyway what first comes to mind is the constant pushing towards unity, a "one Singapore, one Nation". What we've got here in our "elite" schools smells of snobbery and contempt for these people who just happen to be "in the lower class" simply because they can't fulfill the sometimes rediculously demanding standards in school. One of the principal causes of this is the extremely unforgiving streaming system employed by the Singapore education system. Having made it to top school, some students are made to feel as if they are destined for the top of the social ladder and likewise some students who are less academically inclined are relegated to the bottom of the education system to basically fend for themselves. Obviously this is going to create a monumental gap between these two groups of people and I would not lay blame entirely on these top performing students for their arrogance. It is a fundamental flaw in the system that is more to blame, and also the culture that encourages fierce competition and apathy for those that have been overtaken.

I'd just like to add my own point of view to this whole discussion here. I'm assuming that you've read the document about the elitism in schools in Singapore...
In the army I had a lot of contact with many of these so-called "condemned" people. Some of them have diplomas, some of them have only reached GCE 'N' levels. All of them however, are just as streetwise as you and me, perhaps even more so because having to fend for themselves as early as secondary school isn't an easy task and certainly not one that I nor many of my peers, having been spoon fed in a more prestegious school, have had to do.
As a matter of fact, in the army they don't really care what your education level is, only how good you are at taking orders (if you're just a man) or how good you are at giving orders (if you're an officer). In this environment, I have sometimes seen gunners who have GCE 'O' level education display far more common sense than a specialist or even an officer. Likewise for some of the specialists who never made it past their 'O' levels. Some of them make use of their free time out of camp to work and do business, some of them study and eventually go on to get their diplomas. Some others make tactical or administrative suggestions in camp that are far better than the original plans put forward.
The point I'm trying to make here is that you don't need a university degree to strike it big. Some university graduates still display remarkably childish behavior, and some non-graduates have become very successful businessmen or inventors. Everybody is good at something; and I believe that what matters most is whether you're content with your lot in life and whether you retain your respect for others as well as yourself. You can't classify a person's ability based on academic performance alone, but sadly this is exactly what we are doing here in Singapore.

Remember all the talk about Heartlanders and Cosmopolitans? How on earth are we going to get our "one Singapore, one Nation" image when our prime minister can coin such terms that divide the population into two (pretty unequal) groups?
We, as Singaporeans, have a pretty well established identity. It's defined by the hawker centres we eat at, by the Esplanade and the Merlion along the Singapore River, by the fact that we have a unique blend of many different cultures that in some other parts of the world are bitter enemies, and many other things too numerous to mention. Granted, we're pretty young as a nation and given how small Singapore is and how well it is connected and thus influenced by the rest of the world, we ARE unique. I saw a cultural show put up here in Michigan by our own Singapore Student Society and at first it struck me as too artificial: the singing of national day songs such as Chan Mali Chan and stuff by local composers like Dick Lee, dances that are actually a motley of all the different cultural dances we see here and so on. Seen from an outsiders point of view, it does actually pretty much embody what it is like to be Singaporean. Do we preserve this image, or do we try to change it and if so, what should we try to change it to? It's a question that the people should answer but in Singapore, being the "nanny" state that it is, the government will inevitably be the one that plays a greater role in painting this picture, not the people.

Oh no, I missed my last 2 classes of the term. Oh, and this time it wasn't because i overslept, or mark making a racket with his guitar and horse throat at 3am in the morning. I woke up at 8am on the dot, my eyes were wide open, but somehow i couldn't move. I couldn't even lift a finger, let alone roll out of/ jump down from/ fall off my bed. And so i lay there, paralyzed, for more than 2 hours. There goes my 235 review session, there goes my last 240 discussion...argh...God, where's my strength.
Helloz peeps, spring is officially here to stay. Yes sirree, i LOVE the weather, absolutely love it. Hot, sunny with lots of wind, even Singapore's bo chap (messed up) weather cannot stand up to this. I can finally go out in nothing but my t-shirt, berms and sandles. Argh, i must have grown over the winter, 'cause my berms look like shorts now. Yikes. Still, i'm so happy the weather has improved. Snow has become a forgotten word and everyone is in a cheery mood. Best of all, the chicks decided to come out for a suntan. Ahhhh...

But wait a minute, how come no ASIANS are sunbathing in the open lush green fields and the diag??? The answer is simple: Finals. Bloody ruddy freakin hateful finals. The blissful spring/summer weather is here, but most of us are still obliged to stay indoors. You can't necessarily go sun yourself in the diag with a stack of books the height of Yao Ming can you? God, i hate school, end already.

Hey my high school canoeist brother Liu Yun, looks like we'll have to hold off our Macdonald's chicken nugget duel for a while. Seems that i'll have to take spring term to lighten my potentially "banzai-ish" Mech Engin courseload, so go train urself in the meantime alright ? I'm not going to have any mercy on you with my nuggets and curry sauce!! lol...On an interesting note, Macdonald's CEO died supposedly of a heart attack today. Hmm, talking about irony...Anyway, prepare yourself boyo. Me and my high-metabolic appetite are coming. heh heh heh.

Pretty gloomy day as usual (all even numbered weekdays are), sun didn't come out at all, it even snowed the night before! Guess winter's trying to make a comeback, over my dead...cold...body man, haha

Tonight, me, mark and danny were in the room studyin' (a rarity since i'm never in there when the other 2 blokes are present). A funny instance occured when I (listening to my headphones) started singing "Song for Mama" by Boyz II Men, Frankie J's "Don't Wanna Try" and "Without You/Can you Help Me" by Usher. Danny, wanting to add to the mood, countered by singing a couple of Chinese songs, and Mark, attempting to sleep, decided to piss both of us off by singing some random Jay Chow song. Considering his singing is..err..not in sync with the conventional tunes we usually hear (and he doesn't even speak chinese), you can just imagine, 3 guys making a bloody ruskes at 1am in the morning, lol.

Funny thing is, b4 Dan left the room later on, he and Mark both agreed that i can sing as well as Usher......hmm, riiiight. And the end of the world is coming, heehee

A good start to a good day...i thought i had no hw due today, so i slept at 11 and winded up waking up at 5, haha...winded up spending an hour doing 50 downward and 50 sideward slashes with my boken (wooden japanese sword), this sure is one good alternative to doing weights.

For some strange reason, every girl i've met today seemed to be very polite, honest and open with me, from the Media Union cleaning lady, to the Ulrich's cashier girl, even the old grandma who swipes our Mcards at South Quad, haha...hmm...can u spell S-U-A-V-E, heehee...ok it's 1 am and i'm sort of on an ego trip here, so forgive me..

For god's sake guys (you know who you are), stop trying to present this "hip-hop rapster gangster in da hood" image to all the asian ladies...u're ASIAN, not the next Tupac Shakur, so stop trying to be someone u ain't...besides all that bling bling that you got on ya makes u look like one of three things: Snoop Doggy Dog the pimpsta, Sir Elton John the Gay Chap or worse...my ex-girlfriend's jewellery collection. I mean a pair of dogtags may still be fine, but a necklace saying "playa" in purple words...

My sister STILL hasn't claimed insurance money for MY playstation 2 that got stolen from her storage cage last year. Damn it woman, return me my dough!! It's the least u can do having lost something so precious to me while frolicking in the hot florentine sun...dannazione!! Me ne sbatto about the cornuto who stole my stuff, just give me back my money so i can buy another one!!
Well nothing else to report for now...besides Mark acting like a fragile gay princess again ("ow! a splinter! my finger, oooo...should i go to UHS???") and Danny being most generous with his tons of chicken nuggets...heehee, thanks dan, i'm full..*burrrp*
